I’m writing about the Marvel comics published in Finland in Finnish. The Finnish editions of Marvel magazines are called: Marvel, Sarjakuvalehti, Ryhmä-X, Mega, Mega-Marvel, Wolverine and Hämähäkkimies. There are also other older Marvel magazines which I have not purchased so far except for few random issues. All Marvel magazines published in Finland are listed here.
Notice that the Finnish Marvel magazines do not include every story published in US. Our publications have combined from more than one US issues and sometimes we have skipped stories, because the publisher hasn’t found the stories good or important enough to be published in our fewer pages.
I’ll try to write down references to the original US issues, but sometimes the information can be hard to find.
The magazines:
Marvel (1988-1996) featuring random characters/groups including X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Hulk
Sarjakuvalehti (1990-1996) featuring random characters/groups including: Daredevil, Punisher, Ghost Rider, X-Men
Ryhmä-X (1984-1996, 2001-) featuring X-Men stories from multiple series
Mega (2003-2006) featuring Daredevil, X-Men, Hulk, Avengers/Ultimates, Spiderman, Wolverine, Supreme Power
Mega-Marvel (1997-2002) featuring X-Men and pretty much everything else
Wolverine (2001-2002) featuring Wolverine solos
Hämähäkkimies (1980-) featuring Spiderman only to my knowledge.
If you notice this blog hasn’t been updated in a while, it’s not because I’d quit writing it or reading Marvel comics. It’s just that my studies have an unfortunate way of taking up all my time. So no worries, this blog isn’t dead until I have finished reading my collection. :)
It is nice to see how some girls like you love superhero comics! You write with an interesting style.
I would like to add to your list the Finnish magazines (comic books) Hulk (1981-85) and Fantastic Four (1982 -84). The latter showed some X-Men stories before the team got an own magazine.
I remember that in the eighties, Spider-Man magazine included some very nice Fantastic Four stories by Byrne and, of course, The Secret Wars!
All Finnish issues have been indexed into the internet very well (in two places; you gave the link to one of them) and there is no problem at all to trace original issues.
Thanks for your feedback, SK. :) I decided to leave those older Finnish Marvel comics out from my listing because I haven’t collected them – yet. I guess after I have finished with these I’ll have to broaden my ambitions. ;)
Could you share with us the other place where they have listed all the Marvel magazines? I must admit I have not really done much research on the Finnish Marvel scene, because I’ve been used to being the only Marvel geek in the crowd. It’s only lately that I’ve found other Marvel enthusiasts. And the other thing is, when I was a child there was no such thing as the Internet and now that there is, it has never even crossed my mind to go in search for others like me. Maybe I should. ;)
Always happy to hear from other Marvel fans. :D
Thanks. I understand :). If you sometimes will start collecting, some Hulk issues are hard to find.
I am an old male Finnish Marvelist and have “always” (= long) known many similar guys. I know only a couple of female Marvelists, though. That is one reason that makes your blog interesting; you have a female view to comics. You write very well, picking up funny points and giving good scanned panels.
The other indexing site is the international Comic Book Database. Here’s the link to Egmont Kustannus (Finnish publisher) page in there. The place has indexed partly the same issues as before mentioned Sarjakuvarock site, but usually newer issues. Even the brand-new first Finnish Avengers issue is already there.
Thank you, SK. I visited the Comic Book Database immediatelly. I think I might have actually ran into that place accidentally, but I didn’t realise they also have Finnish magazines there. Thanks. :D
Hey, and I hope you had a marvelous Midsummer celebration. ;) I did and ended up like Banshee – lost my voice. :D
